Bill to Revise Fishing Zones

CRIPPLING bans on commercial and recreational fishing in Northern NSW could be lifted if laws passed in parliament this week make it through the Upper House when it resumes on Monday.

Under changes to marine parks legislation, fishing fleets would be allowed into revised zones off Cape Byron and line fishing from ocean beaches permitted.

The five-year moratorium on the rezoning of the Cape Byron marine park would also be lifted to allow the State Government to change boundaries in declared marine sanctuaries.

Changes to the bill were recommended following a review by an independent panel which found the communities impacted by bans had not been properly consulted before the moratorium was imposed.

Speaking in favour of the bill, Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser told NSW Parliament that communities between his electorate and the Queensland border had lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of decisions made by the previous government. …
