MULLUMBIMBY has among the worst rates for vaccination in the First World and needs an intervention, the NSW Opposition spokesman on health has claimed.

aIf somebody had told me that there was a postcode in New South Wales with vaccination rates of less than 50% at one, two and five years I wouldnat have believed them,a Laboras Dr Andrew McDonald told the ABC.

aThis is close to a public health emergency and NSW Health has got no option but to act on this,a he said.

aAny community with fig- ures like this needs urgent intervention.a

Dr McDonald said the low vaccination rates coincided with measles and whooping cough rates as high as they were 20 years ago.

While the State Government prepares to introduce legislation enabling childcare centres and pre-schools to refuse entry to un-immunised children, Lennox Head MLC Catherine Cusack has warned the new laws are doomed to fail if they include exemptions on religious grounds. …
