WESTERN Pride chairman Kym Wickstein is happy how the regionCOs National Premier League football club is progressing halfway through its debut season.

Wickstein was impressed how PrideCOs gritty senior menCOs team finished the first round last Sunday, only losing 1-0 to big-spending competition leaders Olympic.

That came after PrideCOs promising under-20 side upset OlympicCOs star-studded team 3-2.

Wickstein said PrideCOs future looked bright as NPL teams enjoy a weekend off before the start of the second round.

As the chairman reflected on whatCOs been achieved so far, he praised IpswichCOs new spirit of co-operation between football and rugby league.

He cited an example on Saturday when he headed to North Ipswich after helping out the Pride juniors at Briggs Road.

C[pounds sterling]I hang around for 45 minutes watching the rugby league (Jets v Redcliffe) and I was warmly accepted by the rugby league people,COCO Wickstein said.

Wickstein is appreciative of key rugby league administrators like Brendan Rose and Dave Nugent who have willingly shared their facilities with Pride.

C[pounds sterling]One afternoon they put on beers for our players after the game,COCO Wickstein said.

C[pounds sterling]To have another soccer club do that for another soccer club is something special, but to have another code do it is unbelievable.

As for the PrideCOs place in the NPL, Wickstein conceded a number of issues had to be overcome to secure its first five-year licence.

C[pounds sterling]There were challenges that we were going to face being a new entity in a new competition and a new concept,COCO he said.

C[pounds sterling]A lot of people were doubting whether the NPL would be successful, whether the concept was right and whether or not Western Pride would flourish and be successful amongst that. …
