MUST SEES 1 GRAND-PLACE city centre CONSIDERED one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Europe, the ornate Grand Place is the centre of Brussels, where many historic buildings dating from the 17th century are located.

The square is surrounded by glories of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, the most impressive of which are the Town Hall and King's House. It's always bustling with Belgians and tourists either just passing the time of day or exploring the obligatory chocolate shops.

2 ATOMIUM Square de l'Atomium THE atomic-inspired building is an essential photo opportunity with its futuristic but also oddly dated look. Think the science fiction of Flash Gordon comic strips.

The Atomium was the main pavilion and icon of the World Fair of Brussels back in 1958, and symbolised the will to maintain 3 peace among nations, faith in progress, and an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, supertechnological world for a better life for mankind.

3 MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES Rue Vautier KIDS can't get enough of dinosaurs, so take them to the biggest dinosaur gallery in Europe at the Museum des Sciences Naturelles.

Star attractions include 30 fossilised Iguanodons discovered more than 130 years ago, along with a host of other dinosaurs guaranteed to fascinate children of all ages.

There's a fascinating evolution section, which contains fossils from the first shells on up, divided by time tunnels. It's perfect for a rainy day.

MENTION Brussels and, be honest, two things spring to mind. Sprouts and the shenanigans of the Eurocrats who meddle in our everyday affairs.

But that is to do Belgium's unassuming capital a grave injustice.

Take a look around the place because there's lots to love about the de facto capital of the European Union.
