YET again we read of the self-sacrifice that foster carers make, we do indeed need foster "carers", or as I would call them foster parents, as many of them do not need to care for the children in their charge but they do need to parent them.

We do have a problem with some families who just can not manage the parenting of their own children and foster parents do a marvellous job, but can we please remember that they are well rewarded for doing so.

They can earn as much as PS400 per week per child and they also have a good respite care/holiday package and ongoing support from the local authority yet people like me, a full-time carer who cares for an elderly parent 24 hours per day, seven days a week, 52 weeks per year ... my reward is the carer's allowance of just PS59 per week.

Most carers like myself have accepted their responsibilities and are providing care for a family member and by doing so save the NHS alone some PS120bn each and every year. …
