This Is What Super-Sewer's Giant Towers Could Look Like

CAMPAIGNERS have created what they claim is a lifesize mock-up of a 26ft-high ventilation tower Thames Water wants to build for London's [pounds sterling]4.1 billion supersewer.

They accuse the company of spoiling the beauty of the riverside for the 20-mile Thames Tideway Tunnel. The sewer is intended to collect millions of tons of sewage, as the capital's Victorian waste system is overloaded. The plans will be analysed by government inspectors prior to final approval and construction. However, large parts of the project are opposed by residents' groups, and by councils with land bordering the Thames, including Tower Hamlets and Southwark.

Campaigners hope the mocked-up tower at King Edward Memorial Park, on the foreshore at Wapping, will make inspectors refuse permission for a pair of 26ft towers and a 19ft-high column which will draw air from the sewer.

Backed by Tower Hamlets council, the group claims another site nearby is more appropriate for the Wapping shaft. …
