A FOOTBALL fan has denied acting in a threatening manner towards rival fans at the Tyne Wear derby.

Craig Lee Stanworth was arrested during the tense match between Newcastle United and Sunderland at St James' Park last month. He is accused of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. The 21-year-old, of Dean Park in Ferryhill, County Durham, appeared before Newcastle Magistrates Court yesterday. The case was adjourned until August when he will stand trial.

Liam O'Brien, prosecuting said the charges relate to the defendant's behaviour after Sunderland's third goal. Mr Stanworth is one of 29 people arrested before, during and after the game, on April 29, which ended in a 3-0 home defeat for Newcastle. So far three others have appeared in court.

Craig McGee was last week slapped with a three-year football banning order after he admitted picking up a flare thrown by Newcastle fans at Sunderland supporters before the match, hurling it back into the Toon Army. …
