Stolen Car Driver Hits Five-Year-Old; Motor Menace Speeds Off

A LITTLE boy was lucky to escape without serious injury when a stolen car ploughed into him on a pedestrian crossing.

The hit-and-run driver jumped a red light before crashing into the five-year-old as he made his way across the road, in Benton, Newcastle, yesterday morning.

The motor menace sped off before abandoning the white Ford Focus, which was stolen from Wallsend three days earlier.

The youngster was not seriously injured and received treatment from paramedics at the scene for cuts and grazes.

But the driver remains at large and police are appealing to the public for help to find him.

And Sgt Jason Ryder, of Northumbria Police motor patrols had urged the driver to hand himself in.

"This collision could have had very serious consequences and we are appealing for the public's help to identify the person responsible," he said.

"We have specialist collision investigators carrying out enquiries into this collision and I'd urge the driver of the vehicle to come forward and contact us as soon as possible. …
