IMAGINE this scenario.

A single mother of three decides she is not getting anywhere in her job in tourism, so when a flyer arrives in the mail advertising the sale of a beauty salon, she decides to buy it.

She has never owned a business before, and it took every cent she had in the world Co $5000 Co to buy it.

To top it off the salon is in Airlie Beach, notorious for suffering some ups and downs when the tourists ebb and flow.

It doesnCOt sound like a recipe for success. How long would you give it?

Well that was seven years ago, and Julie Cauchi is in the process of opening her ninth salon. She has four beauty stores in Mackay, two in Airlie Beach, one in Townsville, and work is proceeding on her second Cairns store.

She is also one of six finalists in the nation up for the award of Salon/Spa Director of the Year in the 2013 Australian Beauty Industry Awards, and one of her salons, Airlie Day Spa, is a finalist in a Best Beauty Salon category.

ThatCOs not a bad effort, though Julie points out she didnCOt get this far on her own.

C[pounds sterling]Our girls, weCOre like a big family,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]I couldnCOt do it without them.

C[pounds sterling]ThereCOs no way I could turn myself into 50 people; weCOve got about 50 people working for us.C[yen]

Julie had studied beauty before having children and worked in the industry for about six to 12 months, but the early days were tough.

However, it didnCOt take long before she opened a second store in order to find a solution to a problem.

C[pounds sterling]I was working seven days a week at Airlie Beauty and Tanning, for about the first 12 months,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]We were running the business more like a day spa, but we were getting a lot of backpackers who were coming in for tanning and waxing, and they were noisy and were interfering with those who were having massages, facials and things,C[yen] she said. …
