AFORMER accountant from the region looks dressed for success with the launch of a new vintage clothing and accessories store.

Ali Carr has swapped figures for fabrics to open Rose & Alice Vintage Boutique in Newcastle city centre.

The 31-year-old from South Shields decided to turn her love for vintage fashion into a business after living in Glasgow where the vintage clothing scene is well-established, with its own dedicated retail quarter.

She gave up her career as an accountant for a hotel company and approached Tedco's Ready for Business programme for support. Carr said: "With my accountancy background I'm no stranger to figures and business plans but when it comes to writing your own plan it is still quite daunting.

"Bill Hartshorne, business advisor at Tedco, provided real help and support. He helped me to shape my business plan to present to the bank, resulting in a much quicker positive response, enabling me to open my doors sooner than anticipated.

"Having the advice and support of someone who has helped hundreds of people to start and grow their own business gave me the confidence I needed to believe in what I was doing and take it from an idea to reality.

"Bill is a regular visitor to the new store, checking in to ensure things are OK and helping me to develop my business model."

However, it has not all been plain sailing for the new business. Originally branded Lola Rose after the owner's grandmother, the clothes shop, in Pudding Chare, was threatened with legal action from a London-based business trading under the same name.

Carr said: "It came as a real shock and initially I was upset as I had not only invested in my branding but had got involved in activities to promote the business and the name. …
