EVEN when the local weather seems to be set fair, there is always the chance that a sudden change will make even the most familiar of routes rather more tricky.

So it was that foggy conditions around Osmotherley again showed the importance of suitable clothing and footwear as well as a relevant map.

From the market cross at Osmotherley we walk in a northerly direction up the sloping roadway before turning left along the Cleveland Way into Rueberry Lane.

This wide trackway rises past houses on our right and we soon pass the side lane to the Lady Chapel on our right.

A downhill slope takes us past Chapel Wood Farm on the left and after passing through a wooden gate there is a hedge on our left side.

We soon make our way through a gap between gate posts to reach a wooden kissing gate where we turn right up the slope through South Wood.

Abandoned quarries are on our right as an open area on the right side as we pass through wooden gates at either end of the TV masts.

Our pathway then slopes downhill before we pass through another gate to cross the open expanse of Scarth Wood Moor.

A clear path runs across the moor and at the finger post we follow the slope downhill to the public road.

Turning right, a raised path runs alongside the roadway and at the right hand bend we bear left to cross a footbridge over the beck.

A steep, stony bank takes us uphill past woodland on our right and we continue along High Lane for about a mile.

TRANSMITTING: masts at the moor After the route on the right to Rocky Plain we join the next public footpath that runs beside a wall on our right hand. After crossing a stile there is a wall on our left and after the next set of gates and stile we cross a gallops area.

Another stile leads to a track - Green Lane - that runs down the slope to a squeeze stile on our right. …
