ONE punch has changed Daniel Alan AhernCOs life forever.

The 29-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to 18 months jail for knocking a man unconscious outside a Gladstone night club.

Ahern pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court, after being extradited from Victoria, to one count of grievous bodily harm.

The court heard Ahern was out drinking with his friends in Gladstone on October 10, 2009.

About 1am, the 44-year-old victim was standing outside a premises talking to staff when Ahern and his mate were evicted for fighting.

The court heard Ahern took his shirt off and yelled out that he wanted to fight.

Crown prosecutor Susan Hedge said the complainant told them to settle down, but as he turned away Ahern punched him in the face, breaking his jaw and knocking him unconscious.

The man was attended to by ambulance officers and was later flown to Brisbane for surgery.

The court heard screws and a metal plate had to be inserted into his jaw. …
