CAMPAIGNERS TAKE UP REINS; Bid to Save Police Horses Gallops On

A CAMPAIGN to save Cleveland Police's mounted section has gathered pace.

Social media is playing its part with special Facebook and Twitter pages set up in a bid to show support for the horses and their riders.

The Gazette revealed last week that the mounted section, which currently has five police horses and is based at Ormesby Hall, Middlesbrough, is set to be axed under cost-cutting measures.

Chief Constable Jacqui Cheer said it was "one of the hardest" decisions she has had to make but the move would save the force PS88,000 annually.

Reaction has poured in to the Gazette since the decision was made public - and now campaigns have started to try to save the unit which has been part of the force for the past 40 years.

Facebook page Save Cleveland Polices Mounted Section has been running just a few days and has already amassed more than 2,840 "likes".

On Twitter @saveourmounted has amassed scores of followers in just a few hours.

Both were set up by a Teesside dad, who didn't want to be named, but wants to see the work of the unit continue.

"There is a lot of feeling out there from people," he said.

"I often go with my family to see the horses and I can remember myself seeing them as a child and at school.

"Many people will remember them from school.

"But one of the biggest things that everyone is saying is that the mounted unit is more approachable.

"We started the Facebook page on Wednesday and got just 25 likes, by midnight that night we were up to 1,000.

"There's an online petition too."

Many Teessiders have already added their voices to the online campaigns.

Teesside TV magician Paul Daniels and Boro legend Bernie Slaven have both retweeted the link and Stockton councillor David Harrington tweeted "Guys, you have my support. …
