MLB TRIES TO IMPROVE DRAFT, BUT IT'S STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS

I see that the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft has ended for another year.

Good luck in seeing any of the players drafted appear in a major-league uniform anytime soon.

I understand why baseball has tried to make its draft a bigger deal. I mean, look at how the NFL and NBA drafts have grown. More glitz, more glamour.

Unfortunately for baseball, its efforts just aren't working.

Look at the particulars.

In the NFL and NBA, you can draft a guy, and he'll be able to come in right away and contribute (see Luck, Andrew and Irving, Kyrie, just for a couple of examples in the NFL and NBA right off the top of my head).

But baseball?

The majors are littered with guys who were high draft picks who never contributed. The majors are also littered (or were littered) with guys who were low draft picks who turned out to be superstars (Yes, I'm looking at you, Mike Piazza, Mr. …
