You might not have been able to get your hands on a much sought-after ticket to the Pilton party, and with this year's line-up including The Rolling Stones, Mumford & Sons and Arctic Monkeys, not getting into the world's favourite music festival might have left you disappointed. But with a little imagination, you can enjoy some festival-style fun by having a Glastonbury-like gathering at home.

With comprehensive, round-theclock TV coverage, you can certainly catch all the action from Worthy Farm, and without having to trudge in the mud. The BBC is broadcasting more than 120 live performances broadcast over the three days on live TV, radio, red button and online.

To take full advantage, start by wiring up the television to your hi-fi speakers (a geeky friend will know how to do this if you don't). Send out the invites, not forgetting to insist that guests come wearing the obligatory wellies.

It's probably authenticity too far to churn your back garden into a mud pit (although don't let us stop you). But to concoct a more civilised Glasto-like ambience, why not get your friends to pitch their tents up in your (hopefully dry) garden? If you're short on room or don't want to host overnight guests, simply set up a gazebo. For larger parties, the icing on the mini-festival cake will be hiring a proper portaloo.

Fill up some buckets with ice for the compulsory beer and pear cider, or for more sophisticated friends, have some fun creating cocktails. Be sure to serve up your buffet on paper plates, with plastic cutlery, to keep it in true Somerset style and save on washing up. Serve up a wide range of festival fayre such as noodles, curries, mini burgers, falafels, pies and pasties. And if you do feel a pang of jealousy at those revellers watching the action live? Simply remember that you can always go inside and retreat to a nice comfortable bed at the end of the day, and that you've got a proper flushing toilet.
