THE BEST thing about science fiction is film-makers can push the boundaries of the impossible and still make it believable.

Every now and again a film will come along that has high ideas and concepts, but fails to hit the mark. After Earth is the most recent of these.

Starring Will Smith and his son, Jaden, After Earth is set 1000 years into the future after a near-cataclysmic event forces humans to leave Earth. They settle on a planet called Nova Prime, where humans have come into contact with an alien species intent on conquering the planet.

Kitai (Jaden) and Cypher Raige (Will) embark on an interstellar trip after which Cypher intends to resign his post, but a surprise meeting with an asteroid field sees them land on a very different Earth to the one left behind. Our heroes are left abandoned on an uninhabited world and have to work together to reach an emergency beacon, but not before coming face to face with an Earth that has C[pounds sterling]evolved to kill humansC[yen]. …
