Clay's Dunning Gets the Call; Shortstop-Turned-Pitcher Is Promotedto Giants

Jake Dunning's road to the major leagues wouldn't have been complete without a phone call to his family. Who cares that they were all asleep?

So the Clay High graduate and former Florida State College at Jacksonville pitcher gave them a ring - at 3 a.m. Thursday to give them the news.

"He said, 'Dad, would you do me a favor? Go in my bedroom. Get the picture of me in the Little League uniform in the Pirates jersey and bring it to Pittsburgh,' " said Dunning's father, John. "I said, aeYou got traded?' And he said, 'No, I got called up.' It was a dream come true."

Dunning was called up by the San Francisco Giants early Thursday and joined the team in time for its game at Pittsburgh. He was 1-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 36 innings for the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies.

His path to the majors was unique. He signed with FSCJ out of Clay and spent two years there before going to Indiana.

But Dunning was a position player with a strong bat and exceptional defense as a shortstop, not a pitcher. …
