THE volunteer kindergarten teacher sat on the dirt floor of the Balinese classroom, surrounded by piles of books and materials.

There were no cupboards for the schoolas things, no tables to sit at.

But in that poverty, the schoolas children were aglow with happiness, dressed neatly in their uniforms.

Eumundi resident Eileen Walder watched on as the students sang.

Deeply moved by the studentsa positive energy and spirit, she said to her husband David, aI donat want a birthday present this year, letas give them some moneya.

That was five years ago.

Today Samuh kindergarten in the south-eastern Balinese village of Bugbug has proper concrete floors, reinforced walls and roof, extra classrooms, a kitchen so the children can have something to eat and secure gates to stop the littlies from running off into the jungle.

The Balinese people have had a hold on Mrs Walderas heart since her first trip to the island. …
