GEORDIE BOY Paul Dummett has spoken of his delight after signing a new contract with Newcastle United - and feels that opportunity knocks for some of the club's homegrown players.

The 21-year-old signed a one-year deal yesterday along with fellow Tyneside natives Michael Richardson and Conor Newton who will all be given their chance during the club's pre-season programme.

All three will be looking to emulate the likes of Andy Carroll, Steven Taylor, Lee Clark, Steve Watson and Robbie Elliott by making progress on the first-team stage yet Dummett knows that only hard work will be the key to help he and his home grown team-mates progress on the first team stage.

Both Dummett and Newton were targeted by St Mirren - where they spent last season on loan and helped the Paisley club with the League Cup - but the opportunity to be handed the chance to achieve their dream of making it at United proved too good to turn down.

Newton and Dummett came on leaps and bounds in the SPL last season but are now likely to be loaned out to Championship clubs, with Birmingham boss Clark keen on the left-sided Welsh Under-21 international Dummett.

First though they will be expected to step up to the plate in pre-season.

After signing his new contract, Dummett told the Chronicle: "It taken a while but I am delighted to sign my new deal.

"Now I will be looking to hopefully impress in preseason.

"I am a home grown player and in this city it is every boy's dream to play for Newcastle. Staying at Newcastle was always my number 1 priority."

And he believes he will arrive for pre-season training in early July in good stead after making 30 appearances for the League Cup winners.

Dummett said: "Being out on loan has helped me. It is all about playing week-in, week-out.

"Whether a loan happens this season we will see. I know the club might have that in mind.

"Now I just want to work hard in pre-season and last season's experiences with St Mirren can only help me. …
