BUSINESS Council of Australia president Tony Shepherd said returned Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had to restore business and consumer confidence by aimmediately marking out an agenda focused squarely on jobs, investment, competitiveness and growtha.

aTo achieve the office of prime minister is the greatest honour that can be bestowed on any Australian, but with it goes great responsibility, particularly at this time,a Mr Shepherd said. aWe welcome Mr Rudd identifying the need for government to re-engage with business, because maintaining a respectful dialogue with business on important issues is critical to address our competitiveness challenges, make it easier for business to hire more people and ensure a strong and growing economy.

aNow that the leadership has been resolved, there is a need for decisive action in key areas to restore business and community confidence.

aThe government must commit to a comprehensive growth agenda that can only be achieved by working in partnership with businesses, large and small.a

Council of Small Business of Australia executive director Peter Strong said the new Prime Minister needed to shift the governmentas focus away from large corporations and unions.

aFor too long the government has focused on its own needs and not the needs of the nation,a Mr Strong said.

aAs a result too much policy has been decided by unions for workplace relations and by Coles and Woolworths, and the big landlords, on competition policy and contract law.

aThe needs of all businesses, not just a handful, need to be considered. The government must move quickly to get confidence back in the economy.a

Mr Strong said progress had been made under Julia Gillardas leadership, including the appointment of a national small business commissioner and the moving of the small business minister into cabinet. …
