BALLINA Shire Council has been forced to review some of its asbestos management procedures after WorkCover called a halt to renovations to a shop in Wigmore Arcade.

A WorkCover NSW spokesperson said they had been notified that there could be asbestos in material at a construction site on River St, Ballina.

aWorkCover directed the principal contractor to cease all work until a clearance certificate was issued by a competent person,a the spokesperson said.

The councilas general manager, Paul Hickey said WorkCover was anot happya with the original clearance certificate so another one had to be issued.

Clearance for work to continue was provided on Monday afternoon and Mr Hickey said work resumed on Tuesday morning.

However it has since been confirmed by the councilas risk section that an asbestos register should have been available for Wigmore Arcade.

aUnfortunately this was not the case in this instance, albeit that the council offices are immediately across the road,a Mr Hickey said. …
