MOST of SEAT's cars have names which proclaim the firm's Spanish roots with pride and the Toledo is one of them.

Alternating between saloon and hatchback guise throughout the model's history the last incarnation was a slightly curious-looking hatchback that followed SEAT's favoured family look of the time.

Slow sales saw its lifespan cut short - prematurely perhaps - but whatever the case you're unlikely to see many of them on UK roads.

This latest version would appear to mark a return to saloon format but first appearances can sometimes be deceptive.

It certainly looks very like a saloon, though in reality it's a cleverly disguised hatchback, even if it doesn't display the traditional rounded looks.

It's a fairly straightforward car from a design perspective, in the way many small-ish saloons tend to be. Boxy and simple it's also more or less identical to Skoda's recentlylaunched Rapid.

While it's unlikely to inspire it's relatively inoffensive too.

Based on an elongated VW Polo platform its big strength is its sheer practicality.

For a car of its size it is impressively spacious, both in terms of catering comfortably for rear seat passengers and the amount of boot space it offers.

Its boot really does have to be seen to be believed - all 550 litres of it.

In short it's way larger than those of many saloons several classes above it and enhances the Toledo's credentials as a family-friendly motor.

I noticed its cavernous capabilities when it came to packing a load of musical equipment into it - an amplifier, three guitars a box of leads and associated bits and bobs.

Normally I'd have expected to have to share it out between the boot and the back seat but amazingly it all went in the boot.

This feat confused me somewhat, to the point where I had to double check it was all actually in there - and sure enough it was. …
