HORSES left uncared for pose a risk to Northumberland residents, an MP has warned.

Ian Lavery said people will die and suffer serious injuries if local authorities do not tackle an "explosion of irresponsible horse ownership".

And he claimed animals were "being tethered to almost every unoccupied blade of grass" in his Wansbeck constituency as he called on local authorities to tackle the issue "effectively and efficiently".

He asked for a Commons debate on the issue after several incidents where horses were neglected or left to run wild in the Ashington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea areas.

Mr Lavery said in the Commons: "In my constituency, Wansbeck, we've always had a healthy horse population, looked after by caring owners. But recently we've seen an explosion of irresponsible horse ownership, with horses being tethered to almost every unoccupied blade of grass. Can you secure time to debate this very issue? Because I believe if it's not tackled by local authorities effectively and efficiently, we'll see a loss of life and serious injuries to the residents, not just in Wansbeck but in other parts of the country. …
