Fall Victim Clung onto Balcony; Man Seen Trying to Save Himself before Plunging to Death from Fifth Floor

Article excerpt

FLAT fall victim Stephen McLean frantically tried to save himself by clinging to a balcony before plunging to his death, eyewitnesses revealed today.

They told of the horrifying moment the 45-year-old somehow flew out of a fifth floor window in Newcastle's Byker Wall when an early-morning party in one of the flats turned to tragedy.

Magic said Mr McLean grew up in the Jesmond area of Newcastle and attended Heaton Manor School.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how he was set upon after he sent a text message to Shaun Rogers, then 27, from Laith Road, North Kenton, in August 2008.

Rogers and Graeme Duffy, then 31, of Elliott Drive, Felling, Gateshead, travelled to Mr McLean's flat armed with a kitchen knife, and after smashing their way in they pinned him down. …
