Colgate Meets Its Waterloo as Free Toothbrush Offer Floods Concourse

A PROMOTIONAL stall handing out free electric toothbrushes to commuters at Waterloo station was forced to shut today after hundreds of people overwhelmed staff and caused "mayhem" on the concourse.

Rail bosses ordered the closure of Colgate's "brushswap" event amid safety fears. The Colgate offer, due to run from today until Friday, gave people the chance to swap any old, electric toothbrush for a new [pounds sterling]169.99 ProClinical A1500 product.

But they apparently underestimated demand for the deal, with some commuters arriving at 5am to claim their toothbrush. By 7am consumers were being told there were no more available as the 150 allocated products had been handed out.

By 9.30am Colgate had posted a tweet saying: "Due to crowd numbers we have been asked to close down the stand. Apologies for the inconvenience caused. We are planning the best way to open this week." The promotion was also due to run at Victoria Station next week. …
