HISTORICAL SOCIETY TELLS STORY OF DANIEL CALLAHAN

The Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society will present the story of Daniel Callahan at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Amelia Island Museum of History, 233 S. Third St., in Fernandina Beach. Speaker John Hendricks has traced the life and times of Callahan, his many successes, failures and involvements in the building of railroads across the United States and beyond. Hendricks grew up south of Callahan, within yards of the Atlantic Coast Line's main double-tracked line to Waycross, Ga. He recently published the book, "Following in the Tracks of Daniel Callahan." 3 CANDIDATES RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL

Three candidates have qualified to run for the Group 4 City Council seat held by Councilman Richard Johnson, a retired dentist who is not running for a seventh term after 24 years in office. Vying for the seat are Dennis Collins, a real estate firm owner; Kirk Gravelle, a financial executive and the county's Republican Party chairman; and Sam Kitching, a clergyman who also works at the Sheriff's Office. No other seats were challenged in the city or in Glen St. Mary, said Elections Supervisor Nita Crawford. The primary is Sept. 10.

19-YEAR-OLD GIVEN LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Zach Cox, 19, of Green Cove Springs is the first recipient of the Detective Dave White Law Enforcement Scholarship. The scholarship memorializes White, who was killed last year during a Middleburg drug raid. It awards up to $3,300 to attend the St. Johns River State College Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Applicants must be admitted to the academy prior to application. Cox works for the Sheriff's Office as a civilian control room operator in the jail. …
