Jacksonville Airport's New Mural Is Called 'Celestial Playground'

"Celestial Playground," a mural by New York artist Amy Cheng, was unveiled this week at the Jacksonville International Airport. It is located in the airport's pre-security courtyard, near the Haskell Gallery, the restrooms and the water fountains.

Cheng designed the mural to visually reference the sky, the heavens and the cosmos. The mural is made of glass, ceramic and stone. It is the 14th work in the JIA's permanent collection.


The Broadway rock musical "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson," a revisionist, sometimes comic look at America's seventh president, opens Friday at Players by the Sea, 106 N. Sixth St., Jacksonville Beach.

Shows will be at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday through Aug. 3. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at or by calling (904) 249-0829. Because of adult language and situations, no one under 16 will be admitted.


The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens will hold an evening of doo-wop music when it hosts a Sock Hop Friday from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

Food and drink will be available for purchase and a DJ will be playing the music of the 1950s and early 1960s. People at the hop will have a chance to see the Cummer's latest exhibit, "Future Retro: The Great Age of the American Automobile."

The Museum of Science & History will hold a 47th birthday party for Tonca, MOSH's alligator snapping turtle, on Saturday. It's the one day each year when visitors can see Tonca outside of his pond. At 1:30 p.m. Tonca will be lifted from the pond and will have his annual physical checkup. His veterinarian, John Rossi, will examine and weigh him. …
