BLANCANIEVES Cert 12A, 105 mins THIS silent black-and-white movie from Spain is bound to be compared with The Artist, which is a shame. The Artist is the most overrated movie of the century. Pablo Berger's brainchild is truly enchanting. Set in 1920s Seville, it's basically Snow White, with some great additions. Our heroine (Macarena Garcia, pictured) has a gorgeous Catholic granny, a depressive dad and -- once she grows up -- an unusual love interest. And she's a bullfighter. Frantic flamenco fuels the giddy mood, and while not all the set-pieces work, the machinations of the wicked stepmother (played by Y Tu Mama Tambien's Maribel Verdu) induce especially pleasurable shivers.

THE DEEP Cert 12A, 93 mins A GRITTY if ultimately underwhelming drama from Iceland, based on real events that took place in 1984. Out at sea, at night, a group of mostly hard-drinking, wryly macho fishermen suddenly find their boat sinking. It's something to do with a winch. I don't know much about winches but clearly they're vital. Leading man Olafur Darri Olafsson (as decent, shy, flubby singleton Gulli) looks a bit like John C Reilly and is very sympathetic. He's soon up to his neck in freezing cold water, talking to a flighty seagull. If you enjoy watching individuals being tested by nature, you'll be hooked.

LES INVISIBLES No cert, 115 mins A FILM in which 11 old gay people from the French countryside discuss things that matter to them. It is astonishing how much white heat is generated by the conversations that follow, and 45-year-old documentary-maker Sebastien Lifshitz is to be congratulated for selecting such a special bunch. Alcoholism; tolerant wives; the sexual habits of goats ... It seems there's nothing beyond the reach of these enquiring, non-judgmental individuals. The ravishing, non-twee landscapes that surround them, meanwhile, add to the heightened atmosphere. …
