$11.7M Federal Grant to Pave Glynn Runway; Work Is Expected to Begin on Main Runway in September

The Glynn County Airport Commission was notified Friday it will receive a $11.7 million federal grant to pave the main runway at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport.

Combined with state and local matching funds, there will be more than $13 million for the rehabilitation of the runway, which is 8,001 feet long and 150 feet wide, beginning in the fall, the Airport Commission said in a release.

Should a second grant come through by the end of the federal fiscal year, there will be a total of $16 million in funding, which will also cover the paving of the parallel and connector taxiways, the commission said.

Originally built in 1953, the asphalt pavement were last rehabilitated in 1993. In 2008, the concrete portions were found to be in good condition requiring only minor pavement and joint seal repairs.

The asphalt pavement was also found to be in fair condition, but with significant cracks and isolated areas of swelling.
