Lowe So Close to Clinching Final Spot in Barcelona; Swimming

HARTLEPOOL-BORN Jemma Lowe came within 0.02sec of a place in the 100m butterfly final at the World Championships in Barcelona last night, writes ROGER GUTTRIDGE.

The 23-year-old former Borough of Stockton swimmer came ninth in the semi-finals in 58.46 with only the top eight going into tonight's final showdown.

Lowe, now based at Swansea, said: "I'm so annoyed. I was slow tonight and I don't know why.

"I'm surprised I came as high as ninth with that time. I thought it would take a 57sec swim to make the final."

But she added: "I haven't been doing any 100m training, so I would have been struggling to get a medal even if I had got in the final.

"I've been training for the 200m butterfly, which starts on Wednesday, and at least now I will have an extra day's rest for that."

The Welsh record holder is one of only two North East swimmers who made a slimmed-down British team in Barcelona. The other is Middlesbrough's Aimee Willmott, who goes in the 400m individual medley later in the week. …
