AN improved chance of living longer in Redcar and Cleveland was welcomed today. New Government figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) revealed men born in the borough can expect to live for 78.4 years and women for 82 years, as reported.

Sheelagh Clarke, inset, deputy leader and Cabinet member for health and social wellbeing, said: "We are delighted that the efforts we have made to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents has contributed to the improvement in life expectancy rates in Redcar and Cleveland.

"One of the contributory factors affecting life expectancy is the rate of cardiovascular disease, and the North-east had some of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the country.

"The primary care trust and local authorities have worked together since the 1999-2001 survey to reduce deaths from this disease and this work has taken place across community and hospital services, and includes treatments and support to bring about lifestyle improvements. …
