GUISBOROUGH beat Thornaby 2-1 to win the third annual Peter Morris Memorial Trophy match between the Northern League sides at Teesdale Park.

Two first half goals in four minutes from strikers Danny Johnson and Mikey Roberts saw the Priorymen take the game by the scruff of the neck.

But they were pushed hard in the second half by their Division Two opponents, who pulled a goal back through Jake Matthews.

Johnson gave Guisborough the lead when he rounded goalkeeper Paul Hubbard, and an umarked Roberts got the second from Johnson's cross after he had been picked out by former York winger Reece Kelly.

Thornaby pressed after the break and Guisborough skipper Gary Wood had to make a hasty clearance before Shaun Ireland drilled a left foot shot wide.

Thornaby's pressure paid off when Matthews fired home a low left foot drive from Robert Pearson's centre.

Former Boro midfielder Curtis Edwards played in the middle of the park for Thornaby and is set to play their first eight league games before going on trial in Portugal.

"We did well in the first half and the second half was a bit stop-start at times and our quality went missing, which was a little frustrating.

"But Thornaby beat Billingham Synthonia at the weekend and I thought we were worthy winners in the end."

Thornaby manager Neil Radigan is pleased with how his side is shaping up going into the start of the new campaign on August 10 following a disappointing 2012/13 season. …
