EMERGENCY services were called to deal with a small explosion near to a Tyneside metro station.

Police and fire crews were called to Saint James Road near to Gateshead Stadium Metro Station shortly after 6pm yesterday.

The alarm was caused by electrical cables which shorted under the pavement causing a small explosion.

Residents and passersby were left shocked by the loud bang which set off car alarms in the area.

Two crews from Gateshead fire station attended the scene and cordoned off the small area while they waited for members of the electricity board to come and make the area safe.

Police officers were also on scene and said the explosion caused a very small hole in the pavement.

This is the second time in the space of a week that residents have been troubled by utility problems in the area.

Last Wednesday, July 24, houses in the area were evacuated and a 100-metre cordon put in place after it was discovered gas was leaking from a pipe near to the Metro station. …
