Spectacular SIRF Goes out with a Bang

A FESTIVAL which began and ended with a bang has been hailed a roaring success.

Eye-catching theatrical shows and huge firework displays kicked off and ended the 26th Stockton International Riverside Festival, with lots of intriguing street theatre in between.

And today, Stockton Council's Cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, Councillor Ken Dixon, proclaimed the whole event a huge hit.

He said: "The weekend has been a fantastic success and showed off Stockton at its very best. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make the festival happen and to everyone who has come along and supported it."

Last year, the approximate visitor numbers were 70,000, with an estimated contribution to the local economy of PS1.3m. And early indications are it's done at least as well this year.

Cllr Dixon added: "We cannot underestimate the importance of events such as these for helping to maintain employment as well as providing confidence to businesses that Stockton is a great place to be. …
