A HOUSE with a slice of history - that's what the owners of this week's Dream Home loved first about their property.

That, of course, and its position and location in a pretty market town just 25 minutes drive from central Teesside.

In fact, Porch House is said to be the oldest house in Northallerton and with a well documented history, it certainly has a lot to shout about.

Built in 1584 by Richard Metcalfe, the town house remained in the possession of his descendants until 1988. Charles I was also reputedly held prisoner there in 1647, under open arrest by the Scots for nine days.

Home to its current owners for the past four years, they've loved living within its Grade II listed walls.

"We liked it because it is a very interesting building," explains the owner. "When we bought it, we totally renovated it from top to bottom - it took about a year."

In keeping with its character, the detached five-bedroom property has a wealth of period features from exposed beams with carvings to fireplaces, ranges and sash windows.

The grand rooms are full of talking points and with around 3,000sq ft of living space to enjoy, there's plenty of space to spread out.

DREAM "It used to be a bed and breakfast about 12 years ago," explains the owner, "So the bathrooms were here already HOME In association when we moved in.

" W e didn't have any structural work to do and we run it as a bed and breakfast now."

When it comes to naming a favourite room, the decision is a tough one. The owner likes the space her large home offers. "Because it is a large house, we can live at one end and have the B&B at the other end - although it doesn't have to be a B&B at all," she says.

So, what's inside? On the ground floor, there's a reception hall, a drawing room with a bay window and feature fireplace with cast iron inset and marble surround.
