BATES Cottages have set themselves a top-four target as the Northumberland Premier Division enters its pivotal phase.

Beaten by 15 runs at Stocksfield last weekend, tomorrow sees them travelling to a Blue Flames side who have already defeated once in their victorious League Cup final.

Skipper Paul Baston, who took three wickets against Stocksfield and top-scored on 36, said: "We have surprised ourselves a little given our poor early-season form, the target now has to be to finish in the top four.

"Losing at Stocksfield was disappointing, because it was a game we felt we could have won.

"We thought we were going well, but none of us pushed on.

"Joe Mavin towards the end contributed brilliantly with a well-deserved 27, which was great for a 16-year-old, but in the end we were just short as a result of none of the top five really kicking on."

Hopeful of better fortunes this week against a Blue Flames side still rooted to the bottom of the table, Baston added: "We played them a few weeks ago in the League Cup final and to be honest made light work of that. …
