THE reactions weren't good."I really don't get it," said my boyfriend. "Ghastly," exclaimed a colleague. "They look...painful?" a friend responded, after receiving a picture message of my latest accessory. While my fashion choices often leave friends and family confused (everyone was slightly perplexed when I started wearing a skort), this was different: people were grimacing at my grill.

However, they might need to get with the programme. The grill -- decorative tooth bling, which is rather like a soupedup gum shield -- is the latest thing celebrities are modelling. At Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards in New York, Katy Perry wore sparkling dentalware spelling the name of her single, Roar. She followed Madonna who showed off diamond-encrusted grills in the South of France earlier this month and again in Rome last week. Beyonce owns a fanged set, Rihanna's latest golden grill is (rather misguidedly) shaped like a gun and Miley Cyrus has three so she's armed to the teeth for any occasion. "This is my chic one," she told US Harper's Bazaar while showcasing a plain silver version, before adding "this is my plain gold, [for] when I'm trying to blend in."

But it's not just singers who are baring their grills -- reality TV queen Kim Kardashian and supermodel Miranda Kerr have also worn one and Olympic swimming king Ryan Lochte popped on his $250,000 ruby and diamondencrusted version after picking up a gold medal at last summer's Games.

Now, it seems, they may be biting into London too. Daniel Leff, proprietor of Brighton-based online retailer Bling King, who kindly lent me these grills, says he gets "lots of orders" from the capital and is selling hundreds a month.

"Celebrities like Rihanna and Madonna are taking grills into the mainstream," Leff confirms. "Before them, our target audience was hip-hop followers. …
