Bullock and Clooney Cruise in to Kick off Venice Festival

THE splendour of the Grand Canal provided the red carpet for old friends George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as they arrived to launch the 70th Venice Film Festival tonight.

The pair travelled in water taxis, with Bullock, in shorts, carrying her adopted son Louis Bardo, and Clooney sporting a T-shirt promoting his own brand of tequila.

The opening ceremony takes place at the Palazzo del Cinema before the premiere of Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller Gravity, in which the two actors star. Bullock plays Dr Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, and Clooney veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky.

They face a fight for survival after satellite debris strikes their craft.

Big names including Scarlett Johansson are expected to keep the star quotient high during the 10-day festival. Johansson appears as an alien in Under The Skin, the long-awaited adaptation of the Michel Faber novel by English director Jonathan Glazer, who made waves with his debut Sexy Beast in 2000 but has not made a movie since its follow-up, Birth, seven years ago. …
