IRISH CONGLOMERATE PUSHES PLAN TO MINE SAND

Oldcastle Southern Group is gearing up for a showdown with the Baker County Commission after the commission recently nixed Oldcastle's attempt to mine sand. The worldwide building materials conglomerate, based in Ireland, has hired the Gunster law firm - the 10th largest law firm in Florida. Oldcastle is seeking mediation under a special magistrate to overturn the commission's decision. The group has requested thousands of records from the commission including phone calls, social media posts, emails and texts in the days before the meeting.

MIDDLEBURG

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAMPAIGN FOR ARTS CENTER

Two seniors from Middleburg High School are petitioning for Clay County to build a community arts building for students. Brandon Paris and Emilee Estep said their Facebook campaign, which has nearly 500 likes, was inspired by the county's consideration of a proposed $19 million to $25 million mega ballpark sports complex. County students need a center where they can learn and participate in all the arts, Paris said. The Facebook page is www.facebook.com/petitionforcommunityartsbuildinginclaycounty.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR COMMITTEE POSITIONS

Friday is the last day to apply for one of several volunteer board and committee vacancies in county government. The Tourist Development Council is looking for one person to help it recommend funding for facilities, programs or contracts related to tourism. There are two other vacancies on the Arts/Culture/Heritage Funding Panel, which evaluates proposals that affect county not-for-profit organizations.
