DERMOT O'LEARY has hit back at the "snobs" who criticise The X Factor, insisting the show should be praised for plucking hopefuls from obscurity.

The 40-year-old has just returned to the show to present it for his seventh year, although he revealed he still does not speak directly to Simon Cowell.

He said: "There is an awful lot of snobbery attached to it, it's crazy. Why shouldn't people who aspire to be in the music business, who happen to be a bin man or a prison warden, make it on the show?" Cowell was in the UK for the launch of The X Factor last week, but O'Leary added: "I didn't speak to him but that shouldn't be misinterpreted. That's a good thing for me. Simon usually speaks to you when you're in trouble -- your phone usually goes and you think, 'Oh God, what have I done?' The fact he lets me get on with my job shows he respects it. …
