MIKE MAHONEY Super Goalie (as the supporters' ditty went) lived just round the corner from me in Whickham.

We used to visit the local hostelries midweek for a jar or two. Just to be sociable you understand.

He was good company was Mick, a ringer for one of the Wurzels with his Bristol burr except that it was all topped off by a Noddy Holder hair set.

After keeping goal for United in the 1976 League Cup final at Wembley, Mahoney went off to chance his arm in America as other Mags such as Paul Cannell and Rocky Hudson did.

So when I was due to cover the 1994 World Cup finals in the States I got in touch with Mick.

His wanderings had seen him end up in Los Angeles where he was driving a truck.

As the World Cup final was in LA it was obvious we should meet up.

Big mistake. I had given up smoking for a whole year but Mahoney still had a chimney on top of his head. …
