Searches Continue to Piece Together Peter's Final Hours

SEARCHES of a riverbed are continuing as part of an investigation into the death of a solicitor who died of unexplained stab wounds.

Police are continuing to treat the death of Peter Maine as suspicious and unexplained, although they say they are keeping an open mind as to how he received his injuries.

The 56-year-old dad-oftwo suffered three stab wounds to his chest while out jogging on a Durham riverside footpath on Sunday September 1. He was confirmed dead shortly after being taken to the University Hospital of North Durham.

Officers have combed fields close to where Mr Maine was discovered and Northumbria Police's marine unit continue this week to trawl the river in the same area.

It comes as Mr Maine was due in court facing an allegation of conspiracy to defraud, although it is unknown whether he knew about the charge.

A CPS spokeswoman said: "Prior to his death, the CPS had made the decision to charge Peter Thomas Maine with conspiracy to defraud. …
