MIDDLESBROUGH fighter Michael Joyce will make the transition from martial arts to the noble art when he makes his belated professional boxing debut at Darlington Arena on Sunday.

The former kickboxer faces Remijius Ziausis from Lithuania on the six-bout Professional Boxing On The Pitch Show being promoted by his coach Paul Hamilton and Dennis Hobson.

Super middleweight Joyce got his pro licence a couple of years ago after joining forces with former boxer Graeme O'Malley and Belgian agent Philippe Fondu, but a contest failed to materialise.

Now he is hoping to make some headway under his new team, which is headed up by Hamilton and features his original mentor Kevin Lauder and Leeds-based manager Michael Marsden.

The 28-year-old from Pallister Park said: "This is a new challenge for me and I'm looking forward to it.

"I've always boxed in the gym from the age of about 14, and Kevin Lauder from Joe Walton's showed me the ropes.

"I tried my luck in kickboxing from about 2006, 2007 and won all my fights and a Northern area title.

"But I got bored with it and thought I would try my hand at boxing, but I have been trying to turn professional for a long time.

"For one reason and another it didn't work out, but now my debut is a few days away and I can't wait to get going.

"I want to make a good professional career for myself, but at the moment I'm concentrating on the first fight that is in front of me.

"I've been training for about four months and it's a great arena to be making your pro debut.

"It might not be the Riverside Stadium, but you never know what the future holds."

Joyce believes he is in good hands with Hamilton and former Thai boxer Michael Dicks at Darlington Boxing & Martial Arts Academy (DBMA), which is based at Darlington Arena. …
