UNF Shakeup in Police Department; Officers Were Unhappy with Actions of Top Supervisors

University of North Florida officials removed the retiring university police chief and will not renew the deputy chief's contract after a vice president at the school talked to the rank-and-file officers.

Former Police Chief John Dean turned in his notice Sept. 9, but will continue to work at the school as a safety and training officer until his contract ends June 30. He will keep his $85,000 salary until then, said Sharon Ashton, a spokeswoman for the university.

Ashton would not discuss what was brought up in a recent meeting with university police department employees. She said it's university policy not to discuss personnel matters publicly.

An email in Dean's personnel file shows a conversation he had with his supervisor, Vice President of Student and International Affairs Mauricio Gonzalez. The email said Dean interviewed an employee leaving the department on Aug. 20. After her exit interview with Dean, the chief told Gonzalez the employee was tired of "the negativity of some bad seeds. …
