Bat'll Do Nicely, but Scott Focus on Bowling

SCOTT Borthwick scored his 1,000th County Championship run of the season yesterday, then immediately set his sights on improving his bowling.

The Sunderland-born allrounder was one of two Durham batsman to the important landmark at Hove yesterday. Opening partner Mark Stoneman beat him to it.

But as the team's senior spinner, leggie Borthwick is determined not to lose his all-rounder tag.

For that reason he was pleased, not angry, not to be making his usual winter trip with England's Performance Squad.

He told the Chronicle: "At the start of the season I was looking at cementing my place as the No.1 spinner and I felt I'd improved that as well.

"I'm absolutely buzzing to have had the chance at No.3, and to have taken it. Hopefully I can score a few more in the second innings and take that into next season."

Durham have relied almost exclusively on their four-man seam attack at Chester-le-Street this season, denying Borthwick important bowling practice.

"That's the hardest thing about being a leg-spinner at the Emirates, when you go a month without bowling, then go to Scarborough and bowl 60-odd overs in the game.

"I feel like my bowling's improved this season.

"I feel like the more overs I've got, the better my rhythm."

Borthwick will therefore go abroad this winter to get the practice he needs. Although he will not be with team-mate Mark Wood in the squad shadowing the Three Lions' touring party, he might still be Down Under.

"I spoke to coaches from the ECB and they all said to me it would be good to go away and play some cricket rather than be training with the Performance Squad, which I've been in for the last two years," he said.

"I think they'll send me to Sydney or somewhere in Australia to play a bit of cricket. …
