ANORTH East theatre has been placed on a register of buildings at risk. The London-based Theatres Trust, which works to promote the value of theatres across the country, has released this year's list and it includes the Westovian Theatre, Pier Pavilion, in South Shields.

There are six levels of risk, six being the highest and most critical, and the Westovian has been classed as a level three.

The Trust says the site was included on the table to highlight the fact it was in an area being developed into a leisure and entertainment hub on the seafront.

Rebecca Morland, theatres advisor, said: "The Westovian has been put on the register to make people aware that there is a proposal to develop the seafront area and this particular building is in the vicinity.

There is a level of risk attached to that.

"There is a possibility that alternative accommodation will have to be found for the theatre as a result of these plans, which means this building may have to go. …
