BHP Stands out as Its Service to the Region Continues

Article excerpt

BUSINESSES, schools and families continue to be served well by one of the region's oldest law firms that features strongly in this year's Legal 500.

The legal sector in the North East has seen considerable change in recent years with the emergence of several new names, but BHP Law stands out as one of the longest established 'home grown' practices.

Not surprisingly, many families, as well as commercial organisations, rely on the expertise and experience within the firm, which has offices in Newcastle, Darlington, Durham, Stockton, York and Halifax.

BHP's corporate and commercial team features in this year's Legal 500, with partner David Lucas singled out for mention. Recent matters he has worked on include advising shareholders on the sale of the entire share capital of Electricbase to a plc, and acting for a developer on a multimillionpound financing facility in connection with the development of a hotel site.

David is also the firm's key adviser to a large number of schools converting to academies.

Commercial litigation is another strength for BHP Law. Partner David Birks and his team continue to advise a number of high-value clients on regulatory matters including Public Contract Procurement disputes and this year acted for a large UK manufacturer in substantial building and construction disputes.

David also heads the firm's Debt Recovery Team and BHP Law has an excellent reputation as a leading practice in this field.

BHP continues to maintain a strong reputation in the area of insolvency and corporate recovery and has acted for Broadbents Business Recovery Services, Begbies Traynor and Tait Walker among others.

Associate Paul Hargreaves leads the firm's expertise in employment law, with particular experience in contractual matters and tribunal representation.

Highly-regarded personal injury lawyer Paul Saxon has continued to work on a number of brain injury claims and also acts in consumer protection cases involving blood products. …
