Kavanagh Gets the Nod at Carlisle

GRAHAM Kavanagh has been confirmed as the new Carlisle boss after revitalising the Cumbrians' fortunes, writes MARK DOUGLAS.

He has signed a deal until June 2015 and will be assisted by David Irons, with Tony Caig set to stay on as goalkeeper coach.

The announcement is no surprise given the way the former Republic of Ireland international has responded to the challenge of taking over from former manager Greg Abbott, who was dismissed last month.

Kavanagh has navigated Carlisle away from the foot of the Sky Bet League One table with three straight victories.

The latest of those wins saw the Cumbrians defeat Sheffield United on Saturday.

The club had already offered Kavanagh the job before that game on the basis of his conduct since Abbott's sacking.

He will be officially unveiled on Thursday, but the way he has transformed the club's playing fortunes will go a long way to answering the concerns of supporters, some of whom felt that he was too close to the previous regime to offer a definitive break with the past. …
