Exciting Fresh Start for Schools

Article excerpt

THE School year got off to an exciting start for Central Newcastle High School and Church High School. The two schools will become one in September 2014 under the name of Newcastle High School for Girls and Thursday 5th September saw the unveiling of the new school's iconic logo at a special event to mark the occasion.

At the brand launch, Hilary French, current Headmistress of Central High and future headmistress of Newcastle High School for Girls, outlined the vision for the new school and unveiled a seahorse logo along with materials showing the bold and distinctive teal colour scheme of the school's new branding.

The brand launch was a key milestone in the process to shape the development of Newcastle High School for Girls which will open its doors next year. Its two founding schools have enjoyed a long and influential history within the region and together; under the name of Newcastle High School for Girls and as one of the schools of the Girls' Day School Trust (GDST), they will offer an unrivalled education for girls in the North East of England.

Speaking about the new school, Hilary French said: "The launch of the vision and brand was a very significant occasion and heralds an exciting future for the education of girls in the NE region.

"The merger of these two schools provides a rare opportunity to bring together the best of the old and the new. Newcastle High School fro Girls will have the tradition and heritage of two well known and successful schools with over 250 years of history between them, combined with the vision, approach and facilities of a 21st century learning environment including its ethos, innovative curriculum and buildings. "We are absolutely delighted with our new seahorse emblem and distinctive branding. It is a powerful icon symbolising our strong links with Newcastle. Newcastle's Coat of Arms includes two mythical seahorses and this has been the start point for the development of our emblem which also embodies many desirable values of the new School."

Putting the girls centre stage, the brand launch event included a specially choreographed dance routine demonstrating the intertwining and coming together of the two schools in celebration of the launch of the new identity and an exhibition showing the heritage and history of each school, and the journey both schools have taken to arrive at the present day.

A priority throughout the transition is to keep the girls at the heart of the decision making process so that they can own and embrace the ideas underpinning the new school.

In line with the distinctive brand, a truly modern curriculum has been created for Newcastle High School for Girls - to engage and inspire pupils, while also best preparing them for 21st Century life, after graduation.
