'Despicable' Man Grabbed Charity Box from Chip Shop

A MAN told a court of his shame after stealing a Marie Curie charity box in "a moment of madness".

Robert Mackenzie, 32, of Raithwaite Close, Guisborough, snatched the collection box from the counter of a fish and chip shop on Macknay Street, Saltburn.

Prosecuting Kate Hills told Teesside Magistrates' Court: "The owner was in the shop when this man and a female went in.

"The man snatched the charity box went outside and got in a car."

She said when the owner came out to challenge the pair they moved away.

The court heard how there was no way of knowing how much money was inside the charity box.

Defending Julian Gaskin told the court Mackenzie had visited Saltburn alone following an argument with his partner earlier that day.

He said: "A female, unknown to him, approached and explained she had had some dispute with the guy from the chip shop. Mr Mackenzie got himself involved from that. …
